VOLOBSIS is a portal of access to monitoring data acquired at the three volcanological and seismological observatories of Institut de physique du globe de Paris. It presents also maps of monitoring stations associated with these data.

Observatories networks

To each observatory is associated a network code referenced at FDSN:

  • GL: volcanological and seismological observatory of Guadeloupe,
  • MQ: volcanological and seismological observatory of Martinique,
  • PF: volcanological observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion),
  • WI: Lesser Antilles arc seismological stations,
  • QM: Mayotte volcanological and seismological monitoring network (Comoros archipelago),

Stations are presented on maps or tables, with selectable networks and type of measurement. A list of station names are also indicated and clickable to obtain the main charactaristics. The map can be displayed in full screen mode. Station icons have colors and 2-letter code corresponding to each observatory and network type. Gray icons stand for former active stations.

Real-time seismological data (seedlink IPGP)

Raw seismic data is available in real-time through the seedlink protocol (SeisComP software developped by GEOFON) from the IPGP Data Center server.

Seedlink server configuration

  • Name (hostname) : rtserver.ipgp.fr
  • TCP Port : 18000

Access to available dataless SEED (files by station or a tarball of dataless):

Data streams can be freely retrieved through the Internet using applications and tools compatible with seedlink protocol (like slinktool, slarchive, ...). For instance, the software SeisGram2K [A. Lomax, 2008] allows to display seismograms of WI stations (few ones for the example) in real-time, using the following command (needs an installation of Java):

java -cp SeisGram2K60.jar net.alomax.seisgram2k.SeisGram2K -display.maxvisible=21 -seedlink "rtserver.ipgp.fr:18000#WI\_ABD:HHZ,WI\_BIM:HHZ,WI\_CBE:HHZ,WI\_DHS:HHZ,WI\_DSD:HHZ,WI\_ILAM:HHZ#60" -title="Real-time seismicity of Lesser Antilles / IPGP"

GNSS data (GPS)

The portal provides the access to global satellite positionning (GNSS) data in the RINEX format through a GLASS interface (European EPOS project). The first permanent GPS stations have been installed at Piton de La Fournaise and Lesser Antilles in 2000. Data from repetition or temporary GPS campaigns are not in this portal. The metadata of the stations in Sitelog IGS and GeodesyML formats are available on the M³G platform.

Access to GNSS data

Former Lesser Antilles GPS data (INSU-CNRS Portal)

For legacy reasons and for the period 2000 to 2010 only, data from 10 permanent GPS stations in Guadeloupe and Martinique are available through the GPScope Portal from the INSU-CNRS Technical Service. Daily graphs are also available.

Validated seismic and slow data

Validated continuous data from IPGP Observatories is available at the IPGP Data Center through the FDSN Web Services by using the URL: http://ws.ipgp.fr/fdsnws.

Two Web Services are configured :

Validated earthquake data

Validated earthquake parameters from IPGP Observatories are available in near real-time at the IPGP Data Center through the FDSN Web Service event (https://www.fdsn.org/webservices/), by using the URL : http://ws.ipgp.fr/fdsnws/event/1.

This webservice gives access to earthquake parameters that have been manually reviewed by Piton de la Fournaise Volcanic Observatory (OVPF), Guadeloupe Seismic and Volcanic Observatory (OVSG), Martinique Seismic and Volcanic Observatory (OVSM) and Mayotte Seismic and Volcanic monitoring network (REVOSIMA).

All the events are in a unique common database. In the Antilles, the events north of 15.5° North come from Guadeloupe observatory while at the south of this latitude, they come from Martinique observatory.

Lesser Antilles seismic data (CDSA Portal)

The validated seismological data (catalogs, phase arrival times and waveforms) from all the french Lesser Antilles stations are distributed through the CDSA Portal (Antilles Seismological Data Center) with a time delay. The CDSA processes data and publishes scientific and technical information on seismic activity in the Lesser Antilles arc. CDSA is a collaboration between IPGP, BRGM and UAG (Antilles-Guyane University).

Lesser Antilles accelerometric data (RESIF Data Portal)

The accelerometric data from 27 permanent stations installed and maintained by the observatories are distributed by the French Accelerometric Network (RAP). The RAP is a national instrumental network of strong motion recording for seismic hazard studies. Data and metadata are archived and available through the RESIF Data Portal http://seismology.resif.fr/.

Global broad-band seismological stations of La Réunion and Martinique (Geoscope Network)

Continuous and validated data from two broad-band seismological stations RER (Rivière de l'Est, La Réunion) and FDF (Fort-de-France, Martinique) are distributed by Geoscope (G Network). Geoscope performs the maintenance of these stations in collaboration with IPGP volcanological observatories. More information and access to the data at: geoscope.ipgp.fr

Real-time sea level data in Guadeloupe (IOC-Unesco Portal)

Data from the sea level permanent station DESI (Désirade, Guadeloupe) are available in real-time at the portal of International Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO: www.ioc-sealevelmonitoring.org

Real-time pictures of volcanos (IPGP Portal)

Picture of Soufrière of Guadeloupe, Mount Pelée and Piton de la Fournaise are available in real-time.

Pluridisciplinary monitoring data in real-time (IPGP - restricted access)

Raw data from all monitoring networks, archives and real-time holdings are available to researchers in the framework of scientific and technical collaborations with IPGP, through a restricted access to intranet portals of each observatory (in particular the WebObs system).

Volcano Activity Reports

Reports of the volcanic activity produced by IPGP Volcanological and Seismological Observatories (OVSG, OVSM, OVPF) are available through a web service.

This includes both scientific reports (periodic publications or event-linked reports) and VONAs (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation).

The web service can be queried with different parameters (date, volcano, etc.) and returns a JSON metadata file including a link to the PDF report.

The web service is available at the following URL: http://ws.ipgp.fr/volcano-reports
